On Wednesday, July 29, Variety hosted its 26th annual Annie Madden Sunshine Games, bringing children and young adults with disabilities together for a special day filled with laughter, friendship, and fun on Variety’s Worcester campus.

The annual event is held in memory of Annie Madden, a beloved Variety camp counselor who tragically lost her life in a car accident in 1999. One year after Annie’s passing, her parents, Jim and Mary Ellen, wanted to create a meaningful way to celebrate her life and the joy she brought to others. They believed there was no better tribute than a carefree day of fun for Variety campers and Annie’s friends.

And so, the Annie Madden Sunshine Games were born. More than two decades later, Annie’s legacy continues to bring smiles to the faces of Variety participants each summer.

The festivities kicked off with a special appearance by Swoop and the Philadelphia Eagles Cheerleaders, bringing plenty of energy and excitement to campus. Their visit helped set the tone for a memorable day where participants could simply enjoy being together, trying new activities, and having fun.

Throughout the day, participants and staff took part in a variety of activities, including yard games, a dunk tank, and other outdoor games designed to keep everyone moving and smiling.

Volunteers from Aetna and Firstrust Bank, longstanding partners of Variety, as well as Gwynedd Mercy High School Alumni joined the celebration to help facilitate activities and make sure participants had an unforgettable experience.

After a morning of games and activities, everyone gathered to enjoy a delicious BBQ lunch—a perfect way to refuel and continue the celebration.
