The organization’s mission is to enrich the lives of children and young adults with disabilities through social, educational and vocational programs that nurture independence, self-confidence and prepare them for life. Variety serves children with disabilities throughout the five-county Philadelphia area, southern New Jersey and Delaware.

Position Purpose:
To further the mission of the camp through the development and delivery of science and technology activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ age and abilities. Documented experience in science and technology instruction required.

Qualifications:

  • Training and documented experience in teaching sci-tech to children.
  • Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
  • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce applicable safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply suitable behavior-management techniques.
  • Ability to observe staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce applicable safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply suitable management techniques.
  • Ability to negate or decrease hazards to ensure health and safety.

General Responsibilities:

  • Report directly to Head Counselor, Program Coordinators, Variety Administration.
  • Develop and deliver a sci-tech program that is appropriate for the age and ability of the campers.
    • Write lesson plans that meet camp outcomes and the abilities of the campers.
    • Evaluate abilities of campers and staff.
    • Implement a variety of age and ability appropriate sci-tech activities that most efficiently make use of different mediums, the camp’s natural environment, and sci-tech resources.
    • Evaluate the success of the sci-tech program.
  • Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures.
    • Ensure campers and staff follow safety procedures.
  • Assist in the management and care of the science and technology facilities and related equipment and supplies.
    • Maintain the sci-tech equipment.
    • Ensure the security of the sci-tech equipment and supplies, including clear inventory and planning for replacement of supplies in a timely manner.
  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned.
  • Design programs that adhere to Variety’s required programmatic structure, including adaptations to ensure activities are universally accessible.
  • Assist in any other duties as assigned.
